The shift towards whole, unprocessed foods is being highlighted as a crucial strategy in combating the growing prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), according to prominent plant-based cooking advocate Vittoria Pasca. Speaking on the significant connection between dietary choices and lifestyle-related illnesses, Pasca emphasizes that many NCDs, such as heart disease, diabetes, and specific cancers, are primarily fueled by unhealthy eating practices.
The remarks come on the heels of the recent STEP Survey released by the Ministry of Health, which underscores the necessity for individuals to take active control of their eating habits. Pasca points out that contemporary diets are often characterized by excessive consumption of animal products, saturated fats, sugars, and salts, while lacking in fiber and fresh fruits and vegetables.
Promoting a diet centered on whole plant-based foods, she states, is vital for public health. “When I promote plant-based foods, I actually promote whole plant-based foods, which means foods that are unprocessed, that you just go to the market, you buy and you cook yourself at home,” Pasca explains. She notes with concern that many individuals only consume vegetables once or twice a week, which is significantly lower than the recommended five servings per day.
“Diets are just so important. I would say it’s the first lifestyle factor for sure. Definitely, diets that are too high in fat, too poor in fiber, and too high in sugar and salt are the biggest problems,” she adds.
Kriti Prasad, Acting Manager for the National Food and Nutrition Center at the Ministry of Health, highlighted that the STEP survey has provided valuable insights into current food habits. Health experts continue to stress that NCDs are among the leading causes of mortality in the country, contributing to a considerable burden on families and healthcare systems.
Advocates argue that raising awareness and implementing practical dietary changes at the household level are essential for reversing the alarming trend of rising NCDs. By making informed choices about food, individuals and families can play a pivotal role in fostering better health outcomes.
