The Fijian government is set to transform Lau into a prominent tourism destination, aiming to broaden the reach of the tourism industry beyond its established strongholds. Tourism Minister and Civil Aviation Minister Viliame Gavoka highlighted that current tourism activities in Fiji are heavily concentrated in a few areas, particularly Nadroga, Navosa, and Ba, which collectively account for approximately 70 percent of the nation’s tourism.

Gavoka envisions Lau as the next area to experience significant growth, akin to the well-frequented Denarau, thanks to its stunning lagoons and breathtaking natural beauty. He expressed a desire for Lau to be recognized alongside renowned destinations such as the Coral Coast, the Mamanuca Islands, and the Yasawa Islands, noting, “One of the reasons I want to focus on Lau is that it is blessed with exquisite and idyllic lagoons.”

While the potential for Lau to become a major tourism hub is evident, Gavoka identified the development of essential tourism infrastructure and services as a critical challenge that must be addressed. Despite this, he remains optimistic about the initiative’s prospects, citing robust support from fellow Cabinet members as a key factor in moving the plan forward.

The expansion of tourism into new regions like Lau is expected to not only enhance the overall contribution of the tourism industry to Fiji’s economy but also create new opportunities for communities that are not located in traditional tourism centers. This initiative underscores a positive shift towards inclusive growth and sustainable tourism development in Fiji.
