A couple has appeared in the Suva Magistrate Court in connection with an alleged corruption case involving approximately $500,000. Edua Biuvuli Matai, a former Principal Accounts Officer for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, faces charges from the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) for abuse of office. His wife, Taucilagi Duri, is charged with aiding and abetting this abuse.
The allegations state that between November 2019 and June 2022, while employed in civil service, Matai misused his authority by failing to disclose personal interests in a business called Ink Escape Supplies. He allegedly facilitated the business’s addition as an RFMF vendor, resulting in unlawful payments amounting to $467,616.40, which were detrimental to the RFMF’s rights.
During the court proceedings, Senior Magistrate Sufia Hamza noted that the couple had been remanded due to their inability to provide sureties. The magistrate instructed the couple’s lawyer to arrange for sureties who are older and possess authority over them.
FICAC did not oppose bail but requested strict conditions, including a non-cash bond of $5,000, monthly reporting to FICAC, and the surrender of their travel documents. The case has been adjourned for a bail hearing later today.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts to combat corruption in Fiji and reflects the legal system’s commitment to holding individuals accountable for misusing their positions. Such actions can serve as a reminder of the importance of integrity and transparency in public service.
Summary: A former military accounts officer and his wife are facing charges of corruption involving $500,000 in a case brought by FICAC. They appeared in court and have been remanded while arrangements for bail conditions are being discussed, emphasizing the commitment to addressing corruption in Fiji.
