The upcoming McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji Sevens tournament is set to provide a vital opportunity for players in the Fiji Airways Fiji Men’s 7s extended squad to earn their spot on the final team for the HSBC Singapore Sevens leg, according to head coach Osea Kolinisau. This tournament will showcase a youthful Fiji Babas side, offering them the chance to compete against esteemed international opponents.
Kolinisau emphasized the importance of this tournament for assessing the talent of young players within the squad. “We’ve selected a young team for the competition because I want to assess the youngsters,” he stated. He highlighted the significance of gaining experience at the series level, especially with competitive teams such as the USA, the British Army, and schools from New Zealand and Australia participating. This creates an exciting environment for young athletes to get a firsthand experience of high-level competition.
The head coach has been impressed with the commitment and dedication shown by the younger players during training sessions. “The youngsters in the side have been training exceptionally well. They have been putting their hands up, pushing the senior players, and giving them a good run for their money,” Kolinisau noted, expressing optimism for what lies ahead. He believes that if the young players perform to their full potential, they could become a significant surprise at the Singapore tournament.
As the Fiji Babas prepare for competition, they find themselves in pool A alongside formidable teams such as the Seattle Barbarians from the United States, Nationwide Sydney Nadi from Australia, and Police Blues. The Coral Coast Fiji Sevens promises to be an exciting platform for the next generation of rugby talent in Fiji, fostering growth and providing invaluable experience that could reshape their futures in the sport.
