The Cook Islands has faced its first dengue-related fatality amid a widespread surge in cases, prompting health officials to issue warnings for tourists. The country’s health ministry reported that an elderly patient with pre-existing health conditions passed away after arriving at the hospital late in the progression of the disease on February 2.

In response to the alarming rise in dengue cases, which have exceeded 500 since the outbreak was declared in May 2025, authorities have launched Operation Namu-26. This initiative aims to enhance awareness and prevention efforts through increased insecticide spraying in the affected areas and a nationwide cleanup campaign to eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites.

The dengue virus is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites, and the symptoms can range from mild to severe, potentially leading to serious health complications. Health officials in New Zealand noted that 86 individuals had contracted dengue, with a majority of cases linked to recent travel to the Cook Islands. Additionally, around 40 suspected cases have been reported among visitors returning to New Zealand since May.

Health officials emphasize the importance of seeking immediate medical attention for flu-like symptoms, which may include headaches, joint and muscle pain, nausea, and rash. Dr. Maryann Heather, a clinician and lecturer at the University of Auckland, highlighted that approximately one in four dengue infections result in significant illness, with young children and the elderly being particularly vulnerable.

Tourism operators are actively participating in dengue prevention by providing safety materials and implementing mosquito control measures in line with health ministry guidelines. As travelers return to the Cook Islands, officials stress the importance of being aware of the ongoing dengue risk, especially given the seasonal nature of the disease.

Authorities remain vigilant in addressing the outbreak while educating the public about prevention and safety measures, ultimately aiming for a healthier environment for both residents and visitors alike.
