Suspended Fiji Corrections Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa has asserted that his wife, Vakaloloma Mocevakaca Nakarawa, was dismissed from her role as Nurse Practitioner within the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) without cause, despite being cleared of any wrongdoing by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). FICAC’s investigation found no evidence of nepotism regarding her appointment, which had undergone a transparent selection process.
In a statement, Dr. Nakarawa expressed profound concerns over the abrupt termination carried out by the Acting Commissioner without requisite due process, raising critical questions regarding fairness and the motivations behind such decisions. He argued that it is alarming that a public servant exonerated from allegations can still face arbitrary dismissal, undermining the integrity of governmental institutions.
The recent termination has reignited discussions about the recruitment practices within the FCS. There has previously been a significant level of scrutiny and public concern while allegations of nepotism lingered during the appointment phase. FICAC had established that the hiring was executed under proper protocols, including public advertisements and interviews conducted by a professional panel, emphasizing that perceptions of nepotism could significantly affect public trust.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has underscored the need for greater transparency and ethical standards within public service. He indicated that these issues would be addressed in upcoming sessions of the Constitutional Offices Commission, potentially setting the stage for reforms that could fortify recruitment practices and improve trust in government operations.
This unfortunate incident reveals not only a personal impact but points towards systemic issues within the hiring procedures of public institutions in Fiji. The hope remains that increased scrutiny can lead to meaningful changes, establishing clearer guidelines and safeguards to prevent the appearance of favoritism and reinforce accountability in public service appointments. As officials navigate these challenges, they have an opportunity to enhance the principles of justice and fairness, ultimately benefiting the relationships between the government and the communities they serve.
