Independent MP Rinesh Sharma has voiced strong opposition to the ongoing efforts to amend the 2013 Constitution, emphasizing the importance of public involvement and transparency in the process. During a recent parliamentary debate, Sharma raised concerns about the proposed changes, advocating for a more inclusive approach that reflects the voices of the Fijian people.

Despite his opposition to the amendments, Sharma played a controversial role as one of four FijiFirst MPs who supported allowing the Prime Minister to introduce the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025. He justified this decision as necessary to enable further parliamentary discussions on the matter. “I agree this Constitution needs amendments, but the correct process must be followed. If it’s done wrongly, let’s correct it,” he stated, highlighting the need for careful consideration and proper procedures.

Sharma also pointed out that the Bill requires a three-quarters majority to pass, warning that without such support, the issue might ultimately fall to the Supreme Court. This ongoing debate reflects a broader division among lawmakers about whether to amend or preserve the Constitution, with many independent MPs echoing concerns about the concentration of power and the need for a more equitable governance framework.

His vote was intended to facilitate debate and informed decision-making, but he faced criticism, particularly on social media, where he addressed unfounded rumors about his motivations. Sharma emphasized that he engaged in extensive consultations with various stakeholders, including ministers and legal experts before casting his vote in favor of the motion to suspend the bill.

Moreover, he called for the government to ensure full transparency regarding the proposed amendments, arguing that providing clear information is essential for building public trust and fostering broader support in Parliament. He reminded constituents that constitutional review was part of the election promises made by political parties in 2022, urging voters to hold them accountable.

The parliamentary discussions signify a critical juncture for Fijian governance, presenting an opportunity for meaningful reform that prioritizes democratic values and public engagement. While the outcome remains uncertain, the discourse so far illustrates a commitment to transparency and inclusivity, which could pave the way for a more representative governance structure in Fiji.
