With the Namosi Challenge fast approaching on June 7, Ed Hawkes, a well-respected figure in Fiji’s endurance running scene, has shared critical advice for participants eager to make the most of this challenging half-marathon. Hawkes, who contributes extensively to the local running community and serves as the secretary of the Suva Marathon Club, emphasizes that proper nutrition and hydration are paramount.

Hawkes points out the potential for significant weight loss due to heat and humidity during the race, noting that participants can lose over 1kg of water weight on humid days. He recommends that runners should aim to drink at least 500ml of water during the race and stay well-hydrated in the days leading up to the event. The organized course will feature three water stops, making it easier for participants to manage their hydration effectively.

Moreover, he stresses the importance of pre-race meals, encouraging runners to consume a protein-rich dinner the night before and a light snack, such as a banana, on race morning. He advises against common mistakes like skipping meals or consuming heavy food before the event, which can hinder performance and make the race more challenging.

Post-race recovery is equally important, with Hawkes advising participants to have a protein-rich meal within two hours of completing the race to aid recovery. Participants will have breakfast options available at the finish line or can bring along some cash.

Hawkes describes the Namosi Challenge as among Fiji’s most scenic running events, bringing not just a test of endurance but also an opportunity to appreciate the island’s natural beauty. He encourages all participants to carefully plan their nutrition and hydration strategies for a more pleasant experience, reminding them that the race is not solely about finishing times, but also enjoying the breathtaking landscapes along the way.

This annual event, which draws upon community support and engagement, is not just a competition but a celebration of camaraderie and the stunning Fijian outdoors. Hawkes’ insights underline the notion that thoughtful preparation allows runners to maximize their experience, making it one of hope and collective spirit.
