A small number of criminals are capitalizing on the devastation of drug addiction, leading to significant harm within communities, stated Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development. At a recent event dedicated to the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Mr. Ditoka declared that the government is taking decisive action to address the escalating drug crisis, which he described as life-threatening.

He emphasized that drug abuse is ravaging families and causing deep societal damage, insisting that “we will not allow a handful of criminals to profit from our people’s suffering.” Mr. Ditoka highlighted the serious repercussions of drug use, including its physical, mental, and social implications, urging a collective response to combat this issue.

In his remarks, he outlined that the government’s upcoming 2025–2026 National Budget includes increased funding targeted at enhancing police and health services. A new comprehensive strategy is being implemented that focuses on enforcement, education, and healthcare.

He made a heartfelt appeal to parents and guardians, urging them to be proactive in protecting their children from drug-related risks. “You are their number one influence,” he stated, encouraging adults to engage actively with their children and help them make wise choices.

Mr. Ditoka reaffirmed the government’s commitment to collaborating with community organizations, religious groups, and civil society to protect the next generation from the dangers of substance abuse, capturing a growing national consciousness regarding drug prevention.

This concerted effort to raise awareness and act collaboratively signifies a hopeful direction. With the right strategies and community involvement, there is potential to create a more resilient society, where individuals prioritize health and well-being, and collectively say no to drugs.
