iTAUKEI Affairs Minister Ifereimi Vasu has emphasized the challenges of addressing drug offenses within villages, noting the complexities that arise particularly when the offenders are part of the community. He acknowledged that while evicting non-residents can be straightforward, it becomes more sensitive when dealing with those who are enrolled in the Vola ni Kawa Bula (VKB), the registry of the iTaukei people.

During his remarks, Mr. Vasu expressed concerns about the potential negative impact of drug-related issues on community relationships, highlighting that many villages are taking proactive measures to manage these problems independently. He stated, “I believe that in many cases, villages have taken an automatic stance on this,” which reflects a growing awareness and readiness to confront these challenges at the local level.

To further support community leaders, the ministry plans to introduce village by-laws aimed at improving governance and order within communities. “These laws are aimed at supporting community leaders in managing discipline and maintaining order,” Vasu explained. Additionally, he mentioned the importance of engaging with families directly and collaborating with traditional leaders and law enforcement to devise effective solutions.

This approach aligns with recent discussions in Fiji regarding the rise of drug-related issues and the need for active participation from community leaders in addressing these challenges. Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua has also called for collaboration between traditional institutions and the government to combat illicit drug use, emphasizing the urgency of the situation and the necessity for community-based interventions.

Moreover, Vasu has pointed out how interrelated cultural structures and the presence of strong local governance can help tackle the pervasive drug issues. He stated, “We accept our responsibility. We must do our part and speak directly to families.” With concerted efforts from community members, leaders, and government officials, there is hope for a more unified front in combating drug abuse, creating a safer environment for future generations.

The initiative reflects a broader understanding that drug issues are not solely a law enforcement problem but require community engagement and cultural accountability to foster effective solutions.
