A community leader is calling on the Government to establish a dedicated prison exclusively for drug offenders, emphasizing the urgent need for tougher measures to combat the growing drug problem affecting communities. Tui Labasa Ratu Jone Qomate highlighted that a specialized facility with stricter regulations and limited visitation rights is essential to reduce drug-related crimes.

He expressed concern that current prison conditions fail to deter drug dealers, as many return to illegal activities shortly after serving their sentences. “They should regret going back to jail. If they are treated the same as everyone else and given the same meals, they will not fear prison,” Ratu Jone stated.

The chief advocated for more stringent laws and harsher penalties to ensure the safety of future generations. “There is a need for heavier penalties and longer sentences. Giving harsher sentences and heavy penalties is important because drugs are destroying families and villages,” he said.

In an effort to foster community responsibility, Ratu Jone encouraged villagers to report drug offenders to law enforcement, rather than taking matters into their own hands. He noted that village leaders do not have the authority to exile individuals, urging the community to allow appropriate authorities to handle the situation. “If people take action into their own hands, they can be charged for it. We do not want that to happen,” he warned.

Ratu Jone stressed that immediate action is crucial to protect future generations from the devastating impacts of drug abuse. “If we are not going to take action now, the future generation will be affected the most,” he concluded, calling for urgent governmental intervention.

His plea reflects a wider concern for community safety and the long-term implications of drug-related crimes, indicating a hopeful movement toward proactive measures and collective responsibility in tackling substance abuse.
