In Naikavika, a village in Namosi, residents are mobilizing to support their local school by organizing a 7s tournament aimed at raising essential funds. Tournament coordinator Basilio Cakaunivalu shared that the initiative was born from a recent village meeting that identified pressing needs for improvements, particularly for the teachers’ quarters at Nakavika Primary School.

Cakaunivalu expressed his appreciation for major sponsor Vinod Patel, who has backed the event set for September, highlighting the positive community spirit driving this endeavor. “We are inviting clubs from the Namosi, Suva, and Nausori areas to participate,” he said. “Your involvement will not only enhance the competition but also aid us in achieving our fundraising goals.”

The Vinod Patel Nakavika 7s will feature rugby along with netball and volleyball matches, providing a full-day of community sporting events. Cakaunivalu is actively encouraging clubs in these sports to register, reinforcing the tournament’s objective of fostering lasting improvements within the community.

Regarding the registration process, men’s 7s teams will pay $400, with winners competing for a cash prize of $4,000. Women’s teams can register for $250 for a chance to win $1,000, while volleyball teams (both men’s and women’s) will incur a $200 registration fee with a prize of $500. Netball teams are also welcome, with a similar registration fee of $250 and a $1,000 prize.

This tournament not only promotes sports but embodies community engagement and cooperation. Similar to other events such as the upcoming Namaka Sevens and Volleyball Tournament, which aims to bolster local athletic talent while fostering community ties, Naikavika’s initiative exemplifies how grassroots sports can mobilize support for essential local projects.

By enhancing community participation through sports, projects like the Nakavika 7s can create ripple effects of positive change, benefitting both the village’s athletic culture and the educational environment for its children.
