Community Development and Local Governance: What’s Next for Macuata?

Efforts are underway to enhance the recognition and governance of local traditional roles in Fiji. The establishment of these roles is expected to significantly bolster leadership across the nation, encompassing areas such as governance, religion, and national identity.

Currently, there are 415 established traditional roles, with an additional 55 roles designated for governance within the regions. This information was shared by the Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu, during a regional meeting held in Sasa Village, Macuata, on the last Saturday of the week.

Minister Vasu noted that the engagement with local governance and community issues has moved forward, leading to the official recognition of village chiefs and clan leaders in the Macuata region. Furthermore, he assured that the necessary preparations for the traditional governance system are in place, aiming to solidify the roles of local leadership.

The government is also enhancing the education of children within communities, emphasizing the importance of acquiring traditional knowledge and the iTaukei language in schools. There is a strong commitment to improving public health services, particularly in health facilities and water supply management within regions.
