The newly inaugurated multipurpose court in Tuatua, Labasa, was officially handed over to the youth of the community, despite lingering concerns regarding its drainage system. Issues with poor water flow have been identified, with tadpoles found in the drainage, raising questions about its effectiveness.
During the handover, Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru emphasized that the government had received clearance from the Public Works Department before proceeding. He expressed his commitment to addressing the drainage problem by escalating it to the Labasa Town Council and the Fiji Sports Council, which will oversee the management of the court.
Significant investments were made in the project, which aligns with the government’s dedication to enhancing sports infrastructure in Fiji. Mr. Saukuru mentioned plans for future upgrades, including fencing the area and potentially installing a shed to diversify its use for community purposes, such as renting out for events or serving as an evacuation center.
This initiative follows similar developments within Labasa, where prior projects have celebrated the establishment of more sports facilities aimed at promoting youth engagement and well-being. The Tuatua court is among a series of multipurpose facilities being developed to provide the community’s youth with space for physical activity, fostering teamwork, personal growth, and resilience against social challenges.
As the community looks toward the future, these projects signify a hopeful direction for youth empowerment through sports, emphasizing the importance of maintaining and further developing these facilities for the benefit of the community as a whole.
