A breakdown in communication is stifling how the concerns of the vanua are conveyed to the government, as expressed by Ratu Ilitomasi Verenakadavu, the Tui Vabea. During the Kadavu Provincial Council meeting, Ratu Ilitomasi highlighted the confusion among the populace regarding the proper channels for raising issues, especially for remote maritime communities.

Ratu Ilitomasi clarified that there are two primary communication pathways: one through the yasana, connecting to the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, and the other via the provincial administrator and district officer, which eventually reaches the Cabinet. However, he pointed out that this communication structure lacks clarity for many, particularly for those in isolated areas who cannot travel to the mainland to voice their concerns.

“There is a great need for a defined structure so that citizens understand where to go for their complaints and how to follow up,” Ratu Ilitomasi insisted, questioning how villagers can monitor the status of their issues when coordination channels remain unclear. He expressed hope that government officials would provide an explanation during the ongoing meeting, shining a light on the need for improved engagement between authorities and the community.

This sentiment echoes earlier discussions on the necessity of better governance and leadership within the vanua, as noted by various officials in similar previous articles. The Permanent Secretary for iTaukei Affairs, Pita Tagicakirewa, has previously indicated that the lack of effective leadership could contribute to social issues within the communities. Furthermore, initiatives are underway to fill significant gaps in leadership roles across the provinces in Fiji to strengthen community governance.

As discussions around these issues progress, there is potential for a hopeful outcome, with prospects for enhanced communication leading to more effective governance and dovetailed planning that benefits all community members, especially those in remote areas. Improved acknowledgment of and structure for local concerns could pave the way for a more connected and responsive governance system.
