Commonwealth Secretary General Shirley Botchwey emphasized the critical role of the rule of law in promoting peace, stability, and development, outlining her concerns about its deterioration in many global regions. Her remarks come ahead of the Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting in Nadi, Fiji, which aims to gather 150 delegates from 56 countries.

Botchwey stated that when the rule of law is compromised or inconsistently applied, everyday individuals suffer the most. For the Commonwealth, upholding the rule of law is not just a foundational element of their charter but requires tangible commitment and collaborative efforts among member states.

The meeting in Fiji is set to focus on fortifying the rule of law as a cornerstone for a more resilient future. Botchwey highlighted the goal of establishing a democracy where every citizen is heard, every worker is respected, and vulnerable communities are shielded from the impacts of climate change. “By working together, we can uphold the rule of law as an essential protection for the people of the Commonwealth,” she stated.

Acting Attorney-General and Justice Minister Siromi Turaga will chair the three-day discussions themed “Anchoring Justice in a Changing Tide: Strengthening the Rule of Law for a Resilient Future.” Turaga expressed Fiji’s desire to examine how the Commonwealth can fortify the rule of law by promoting justice systems that are adaptable, inclusive, and responsive to contemporary challenges.

Additionally, the meeting will feature five side events that will incorporate views from youth leaders, individuals with firsthand experience of the justice system, and advocates for disability rights, ensuring their insights are included in ministerial discussions.

The outcomes of this gathering are anticipated to influence the agenda for the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), scheduled for later this year in Antigua and Barbuda. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka will inaugurate the event. Through collaborative efforts and exchanges of ideas, this meeting aims to address pressing issues and foster resilience for the future.
