The University of the South Pacific Council is currently holding its 99th meeting in Auckland, New Zealand, with representatives from Fiji in attendance, including Education Minister Aseri Radrodro and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad. Joined by Dr. Ofakilomaloma Swann and Professor Steven Ratuva, the council’s meeting was inaugurated by New Zealand’s Governor-General, Dame Cindy Kiro.

In her opening address, Kiro emphasized the strength that comes from collaboration, quoting a Māori proverb, “Whiria te taura here tāngata,” which translates to “a rope is so much stronger if multiple strands are woven together.” This sentiment underscores the collaborative spirit that has enabled USP to evolve into a leading educational institution in the Pacific region.

During the meeting, council members are expected to engage in deliberation on significant issues and future directions for the university. Fiji’s continued involvement and the presence of its officials highlight the nation’s dedication to the educational collaborative framework within the region.

There’s a hopeful undertone as the council engages in dialogue, pointing to potential advancements for educational policies across the Pacific. Through this unity, leaders from the region aim to address shared challenges collectively, paving the way for a more integrated educational future.

The overarching message is one of collaboration and strength in unity, highlighting the critical importance of the University of the South Pacific in fostering educational ties among Pacific nations.
