Selling green coconuts along the roadside in Nadi has proven to be a fruitful venture for Peni Namulo and Sailasa Kaitani. For 14 years, the duo has found that their business is more than just a source of income; it plays a significant role in promoting health within the community.
According to Mr. Namulo, many of their customers are individuals affected by non-communicable diseases (NCDs) or those whose family members are recovering from hospital stays. He noted that the growing preference is for coconuts with less meat, as customers primarily seek the health benefits of coconut juice.
“Many patrons arrive with empty bottles to fill with coconut juice, often referring to it as their medicine,” stated Mr. Namulo. He shared that they frequently serve diabetics and those with kidney issues, providing a hydration option that complements their recovery journeys. The satisfaction derived from witnessing customers return with gratitude due to improvements in their health further fuels their passion for the business.
Mr. Namulo also emphasized that, over time, he has observed a steady influx of daily customers. Initially relying on tourists and the Indo-Fijian community, he is pleased to see an increasing number of iTaukei patrons. The current market price for green coconuts stands at $4 to $5 each, and vendors often strike lucrative deals with local hotels and resorts in the Nadi area.
Typically, Mr. Namulo and his team earn over $100 a day, especially when fulfilling large orders from nearby hospitality venues. He recounted a recent occasion where requests exceeded 1,000 coconuts in one day, showcasing the high demand for their product.
This story highlights not only a successful small business but also the positive impact it has on the health and well-being of its customers. Local vendors like Mr. Namulo and Mr. Kaitani are making a difference, proving that even roadside businesses can contribute significantly to community health and vitality.
In summary, the green coconut business in Nadi is thriving, driven by health-conscious consumers and supported by robust relationships with local hotels. As they continue to serve their community, the dedication of these vendors is a testament to the interconnectedness of health and entrepreneurship.
