Tomasi Tunabuna, the Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, visited the Mua Research Station in Taveuni to review the progress of several Coconut Development Programs. His tour was conducted by Semisi Tuikilakila, the Officer in Charge, who provided insights into the advancements made in coconut breeding at the facility.

The research station is currently focused on breeding 13 different varieties of coconuts and is experimenting with new strains to improve economic returns while also catering to regional demands. Tuikilakila emphasized the significance of coconut cultivation, noting that every part of the coconut plant can be utilized, which greatly reduces waste and increases benefits for local communities.

During the visit, Minister Tunabuna praised the staff’s hard work in developing resilient coconut varieties. However, he pointed out the lack of sheep grazing at the station, which is vital for managing undergrowth and enhancing ecological sustainability in various climatic conditions. He advocated for the reintroduction of this practice, highlighting its crucial role in supporting the station’s long-term resilience.

This visit reflects the Ministry’s broader commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity through innovative methods. Tunabuna’s interactions with stakeholders on the mainland further indicate a focused effort to support local farmers in their agricultural endeavors.

The concentration on breeding resilient coconut varieties, along with the proposal to reintroduce sheep grazing, represents innovative efforts aimed at strengthening agricultural sustainability in Fiji. These initiatives offer a hopeful perspective for the local farming community, equipping them with the tools needed to boost production and adapt to environmental changes. The commitment to the coconut sector, which serves as a vital livelihood for many, fosters optimism for a prosperous agricultural future.
