Prominent sports commentator Satish Narain has announced an exciting initiative for the upcoming 2025 Coca-Cola Games, enhancing the allure of the event by offering a $500 cash prize for any athlete who breaks the existing records in the senior boys’ 100m and 200m events. This move aims to motivate competitors to surpass their personal bests and potentially mark their names in the Fiji athletic history books.

With the highly anticipated race set to occur at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, Narain expressed his enthusiasm about the vibrant lineup of contestants and the expected intensity of competition. “The finals are anticipated to be thrilling, potentially decided by mere fractions of a second. The added incentive heightens interest in what are already must-watch events,” he said, referring to the 100m race on Thursday evening and the 200m on Friday afternoon.

The current records for these events were set by former Olympian and the Pacific’s fastest man, Banuve Tabakaucoro, who clocked 10.43 seconds for the 100m and 21.04 seconds for the 200m back in 2011. In a show of sportsmanship, Tabakaucoro will personally present the cash prize to the new record-holder(s).

The Coca-Cola Games, starting tomorrow, has sparked considerable excitement due to its rich history and significance within Fiji’s athletic culture. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the event, which is further anticipated to boost community engagement and spirit. Over 2,600 athletes from across Fiji, including Rotuma, are expected to participate, highlighting a strong dedication to youth athletics and showcasing emerging talents.

As the competitions unfold, the community eagerly awaits to witness the performances of these promising athletes, embodying hope and pride for the future of sports in Fiji.

In light of Narain’s generous contribution and the overall fervor surrounding the Coca-Cola Games, there is a renewed focus on promoting athletics among the youth, which signifies an uplifting step forward for Fiji’s sporting landscape.
