In the center of Levuka, the 199 steps of Mission Hill remain a significant landmark in Fiji’s former capital. These coral and limestone steps, worn by time and nature, embody the rich history of the area.
During the mid-19th century, Levuka experienced a surge of activity with missionaries, European traders, and settlers flocking to the coastal town, all contributing to its development. It was in this flourishing period that four Roman Catholic Marist Fathers arrived, committed to spreading their faith and providing education to the communities on Ovalau island.
Recognizing the importance of a space for worship and education, the missionaries established Mission Hill as their central hub. It is believed that the steps were constructed shortly after the mission’s inception in 1858.
Luke Tikomaisiga, a 71-year-old resident of Levuka, fondly recalls stories about the iconic steps, shared by his parents. He noted, “The missionaries were determined to create a path that resonated with their spiritual journey, leading to the construction of the staircase with 199 steps.”
The steps, made from local materials and constructed by hand, showcase the craftsmanship and dedication of both the missionaries and the local population. Tikomaisiga also reminisced that his grandfather regarded the steps as more than just a passage; they symbolized the arduous journey the missionaries undertook to share the Gospel.
Designed to offer access to the Mission Hill site, where the first Roman Catholic mission in Fiji was established, the steps have become a cherished symbol of Levuka. They remind residents and visitors of the town’s colonial history, even as the capital shifted to Suva in 1882. Climbing these steps provides not only a stunning view of Levuka but also a connection to its past.
Market vendor Aloesi Raiviti highlighted the cultural importance of the steps, stating, “They remind us of Levuka’s colonial heritage and its role in spreading the Gospel across Fiji and the Pacific.”
The 199 steps have witnessed pivotal moments in Levuka’s history, as generations have walked upon them to honor the town’s legacy. These steps bridge the historical gap between colonial times and contemporary life. Preservation efforts have been implemented to maintain the steps as part of Levuka’s heritage, reinforcing its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adjacent to the steps lie the remnants of the old Catholic mission and a historic chapel.
Today, the 199 steps of Mission Hill stand as a beloved landmark, inviting everyone who visits Levuka to delve into its history. They symbolize more than a physical journey; each step echoes the legacy of those who came before, celebrating the town’s rich narrative.
