Climate change represents a major threat to global water security, a point emphasized by Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu during World Water Day celebrations in Taveuni. He stressed the critical role of clean water in safeguarding public health and contributing to national development. Although Fiji lacks glaciers, Dr. Lalabalavu highlighted that shifts in global ice reserves can significantly impact local freshwater availability.
In line with the day’s theme focused on Glacier Preservation, he pointed out that nearly two billion people rely on water resources sourced from glaciers, revealing the inherent vulnerability of these supplies amid environmental changes. His comments coincide with ongoing government efforts to improve water infrastructure, ensuring all communities have access to safe drinking water and sanitation services.
Key initiatives like the Rewa River Water Supply Project aim to augment water availability, contributing an additional 40 million liters per day to the Central Division and alleviating existing supply challenges. The government is dedicated to enhancing water security through community training programs and partnerships, promoting wise and sustainable water usage.
Echoing concerns about water security, Neil Maharaj, CEO of the Rotary Club, highlighted the drying up of established water sources and the growing necessity for sustainable alternatives. He noted that the impacts of climate change have intensified flooding and increased groundwater contamination, underscoring the urgent need for improved water management strategies.
