Former Kiribati President Anote Tong recently spoke at the Oceania Planetary Health Forum held in Sigatoka, criticizing the manipulation of climate change issues for political leverage. He emphasized that changing administrations often use climate discussions as a way to push their agendas, diverting attention from the serious actions needed to combat climate change.

Tong pointed out that climate change denial still exists alongside a misleading perception that it can be deferred for future concern. This division among global leaders complicates effective action, ultimately endangering vulnerable regions like the Pacific Islands, which face existential threats due to rising sea levels and extreme weather.

He regretted that climate change has lost priority with many governments, citing the recent withdrawal of the United States from climate talks as particularly troubling. Tong expressed concern over the upcoming Australian elections and how leadership changes could similarly impact climate initiatives, referencing previous setbacks in New Zealand’s climate progress due to political shifts.

His remarks echo earlier sentiments shared at the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting in Tonga, where leaders and climate activists emphasized urgent climate action and accountability. This was highlighted by Tuvalu’s Minister of Climate Change, Maina Talia, who noted the dire need for robust climate mitigation strategies now more than ever.

Activists at the forum, including Joseph Sikulu from 350.org Pacific, called for Australia to lead in addressing climate issues, while Reverend Faaimata Havea Hiliau urged support for Pacific nations to transition towards renewable energy. The climax of these discussions coincided with planned events designed to amplify demands for climate action across the region.

This convergence of voices from regional leaders and activists demonstrates a shared urgency in addressing climate challenges. The dedication to finding solutions and fostering accountability signals hope for collaborative efforts to mitigate climate-related dangers and enhance resilience among Pacific Island communities. The call for unity in these efforts reinforces the essential nature of global cooperation for a sustainable future.
