Students at Naloto District School in Ba have celebrated a significant milestone as they now have access to clean drinking water, thanks to a newly commissioned piped water system by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. The project, which cost $3,726.15, was funded through the Office of the Prime Minister’s Small Grants Scheme, following the school’s request for assistance.

In his address, Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized that access to safe drinking water and sanitation is a fundamental human right recognized by the United Nations and is vital for health and wellness. “With this new system in place, students no longer need to rely on stored water from tanks but can access clean, piped water directly from taps,” he stated, underscoring the importance of this development.

The urgency for the project arose when the community’s original water source was contaminated, prompting the Water Authority of Fiji to provide water by truck to the school and surrounding villages to ensure a steady supply.

Ratu Jone Naqiri, the traditional herald representing the Tui Naloto, expressed gratitude towards the government for securing a reliable water supply, which he noted would benefit not only current students but also future generations in Naloto. The school currently serves 114 students ranging from early childhood to primary education, further emphasizing the impact of this infrastructure on the community’s educational environment.

This initiative aligns with similar efforts across Fiji, such as projects in other rural areas that have recently gained improved access to water supply. For instance, communities like Vusama and Navisabasaba have experienced significant advancements in their water access following the installation of new infrastructure, which highlights a broader governmental commitment to enhancing public health and improving living conditions throughout the country.

These developments provide a hopeful outlook for the communities involved, reflecting the potential for substantial improvements in quality of life and health by ensuring access to essential resources like clean water. The focus on sustainable development and health initiatives reinforces the importance of community resilience and government support in fostering positive change.
