The residents of Delaikuku in the Tailevu region are finding relief as their community efforts yield results in establishing a clean drinking water supply. Viliame Vuetibureta, the leader of the youth group in the area, highlighted the challenges they faced in securing this vital resource, particularly the difficulty in maintaining proper water drainage and managing the pipeline.

The youth group managed to gather funding through community contributions during their yaqona (kava) sessions, which included the provision of kava barrels. They organized three fundraising events at the school’s community hall, specifically at Vulinituraga (QVS Club) in Delaituraki, focusing on securing financial support.

A total of approximately $3,000 was raised from these events, aided by assistance from the Pacific Island Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (PIANGO). Vuetibureta noted the collaborative efforts of community members aged 31 and above, detailing their commitment to addressing these water supply issues through formal requests to various governmental departments.

In addition, they aim to work alongside local authorities in Korovou to further address the access to clean water. Vuetibureta expressed their determination, stating that within a two-month timeframe, they would continue their efforts to ensure reliable access to clean drinking water for all community members.

He also shared the joy that comes from the successful establishment of these initiatives, which have received significant support from PIANGO, contributing an additional $2,000 to the project. This has increased the financial backing to around $5,000 for their clean water supplies.

Vuetibureta acknowledged the essential role of community leaders in this initiative, especially emphasizing the importance of active collaboration between youth and elders in their efforts to improve the community’s living conditions. He encouraged youth participation in the development projects affecting their village, urging a collective approach that emphasizes teamwork.

Finally, he mentioned the importance of government support in facilitating these initiatives, highlighting that despite any challenges in accessing government resources, the community will continue to pursue avenues to enhance their living standards. The leader thanked Roko Tui Tailevu for their supportive role in facilitating essential services and initiatives to ensure that Delaikuku can access clean drinking water daily.

Summary: The Delaikuku community has made significant strides in securing clean drinking water through a collective fundraising effort led by local youth. Despite challenges, their dedication and collaboration with organizations like PIANGO have resulted in financial support to improve water supply and ensure healthier living conditions for residents. The ongoing commitment of the community leaders and volunteers instills hope for continuous progress in addressing local needs.
