Babra Batini recounted the harrowing experience of her family as floodwaters inundated their home, leading to the loss of many belongings. The 18-year-old, along with twelve other families, had to navigate through the surging waters in Nawaka, Nadi, on Christmas Day to reach Andrews Primary School, a designated shelter.
Upon their arrival in the morning, Batini and her family faced delays as they awaited the headteacher to open the school. They spent two to three hours at a nearby bus stop before they could enter the shelter. Batini noted that her family, which includes her father, grandmother, and multiple relatives, had to escape the rising waters that reached waist-deep.
Despite the damage to their possessions, including their oven, fridge, and various electronic items, they managed to salvage some belongings with assistance from the police, who provided transportation.
This situation highlights the resilience and strength of communities facing natural disasters. While the loss and hardship are significant, the support from local authorities and the solidarity among families during such challenging times is commendable. As the affected communities begin the recovery process, there is hope that they will rebuild and emerge stronger together.
