The joy of a Christmas celebration has turned into a nightmare for Tara Wati, a 58-year-old widow from Wainividio Settlement in Navua, whose home was destroyed by fire just before the holidays. Wati was out shopping in town with her visually impaired daughter when she received the devastating news from a taxi driver that their home, along with two flats, was engulfed in flames.

The properties, valued at around $70,000, were completely lost, leaving Tara and her son, who was working in Suva at the time, with nothing but the clothes on their backs. “I lost all my belongings and my son’s vehicle in the fire,” Ms. Wati lamented, expressing deep concern for her children’s safety and future.

Prior to leaving for shopping, Wati had taken measures to ensure the safety of her home, diligently switching off most of the electrical appliances. Yet, upon their return, the flames were already consuming everything they owned. The family had looked forward to a special Christmas together, especially with her daughter, Devika Nandani, visiting. “Now everything is gone, and I don’t know what to do,” she said, reflecting on the sudden shift from excitement to despair.

In the aftermath of the fire, Wati and her son have found temporary shelter with a family in the area while they navigate their next steps. Wati has expressed her intention to seek assistance in rebuilding a temporary home on the site of their former residence.

While this tragic event has caused immense heartbreak, the kindness of the community shines through as they support Tara and her family in their time of need. It serves as a reminder that, even in adversity, there is hope for rebuilding and recovery.

In summary, Tara Wati’s family faced a devastating fire that destroyed their home just before Christmas, but they are receiving community support as they work toward rebuilding their lives.
