On Christmas Day, six individuals were apprehended for possession of illegal drugs in various locations. A 38-year-old unemployed man from Nabua was discovered with seven sachets of dried leaves wrapped in aluminum foil, suspected to be marijuana. Similarly, a 24-year-old unemployed man from Qauia, Lami, was found in possession of a branch of dried leaves believed to be marijuana following a police search.
Further arrests included two men, aged 44 and 40, from Vusuya, Nausori, who were caught in Valelevu with two zip-lock bags containing a crystal-like substance, thought to be methamphetamine. In Nakelo, Tailevu, a 52-year-old man was found with 20 sachets of dried leaves wrapped in aluminum foil, also believed to be marijuana. Additionally, a 50-year-old unemployed man from Tomuka in Lautoka was arrested after police found him with five sachets of similar dried leaves.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, indicated that law enforcement officers conducted thorough drug checks during the festive season and would continue to monitor picnic spots and communities for any illegal activity. All six detainees remain in police custody as investigations proceed and drug analyses are performed.
This incident underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to maintain community safety, especially during holiday periods when drug-related activities might increase. The vigilance of the police serves as a reminder that safety and public health remain a priority during festive celebrations.
