Coach Branko Ivankovic has asserted that China’s dream of World Cup qualification remains intact despite facing two back-to-back losses against Saudi Arabia and Australia, leaving them at the bottom of Asian qualifying Group C. The recent expansion of the World Cup from 32 to 48 teams for the 2026 tournament has reignited hope within the Chinese team, aiming to return to the finals for the first time since 2002.

In their March international window, China was just a point shy of second-placed Australia but suffered a 1-0 defeat in Riyadh followed by a 2-0 loss in Hangzhou to the Socceroos. Ivankovic emphasized the importance of the upcoming June matches against Indonesia and Bahrain, stating, “The next two matches are the key. We must fight for victories.”

China’s match against Indonesia is set for June 5 in Jakarta, where they will aim to overcome a three-point deficit that currently places Indonesia ahead in fourth. Following that, they will host Bahrain, who shares the same point total as China. The coach expressed disappointment over missing out on converting opportunities in their recent matches and aimed to improve as key players return from suspension and injury.

A positive angle of this challenging situation is that despite being at the bottom of the group, the chance for a ticket to the finals via further qualifying rounds remains. With renewed focus and the return of important players, including Lin Liangming and Wang Shangyuan, the team has the potential to turn their campaign around.

This narrative of determination amidst adversity reflects a broader trend in Asian football, where nations aggressively pursue World Cup qualification, highlighting the spirit and resilience found in the region’s teams.
