Former Prime Minister and leader of the Fiji Labour Party, Mahendra Chaudhry, has expressed his support for the dismissal of Lynda Tabuya from her role as Minister for Women, Social Welfare, and Child Protection following confirmed allegations of serious misconduct. Chaudhry believes this action, while necessary, does not go far enough, arguing that Tabuya should also be removed from her position as a Member of Parliament.

Chaudhry stated that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka missed an opportunity to protect his government and the People’s Alliance from embarrassment by not addressing Tabuya’s misconduct earlier, particularly during an official visit to Australia, which resulted in her being ousted as the deputy leader of the People’s Alliance Party.

He emphasized, “The question now is whether Tabuya should be allowed to remain a Member of Parliament? We say, definitely Not.” He urged fellow MPs to uphold the integrity of Parliament by referring her case to the Parliamentary Privileges Committee for potential expulsion. Additionally, Chaudhry mentioned the need for a police investigation into allegations of drug and pornography offenses.

This situation highlights the importance of maintaining the dignity of parliamentary representation and the accountability of elected officials. It serves as a reminder of the ethical standards expected from those in public office, and the ongoing discussions surrounding these standards may lead to improvements in governance.

Overall, it is hopeful that this situation can lead to a stronger commitment among parliamentarians to uphold ethical conduct and restore public trust in government institutions.
