A self-effacing Charli XCX was honored as Songwriter of the Year during the Ivor Novello Awards held in London. In her acceptance speech, she humorously downplayed her songwriting skills by quoting lyrics from her upcoming song, “Club Classics”: “I wanna dance to me, me, me / When I go to the club, club, club,” saying, “I’m sure you all agree, I am hardly Bob Dylan.” She emphasized her commitment to creativity, stating, “but one thing I certainly do is commit to the bit.”

The awards ceremony also highlighted emerging talents, with Lola Young and Myles Smith recognized among the rising stars. U2 received special recognition as the first Irish band to be awarded the fellowship of the Ivor Novello songwriting academy, celebrating almost 50 years of iconic hits like “With Or Without You” and “One.” Bono, the band’s frontman, spoke to the power of music, explaining, “Songs can be arrows through time if they come from the right place.”

Additional notable winners included The Killers, who received a special international prize, and Lola Young, whose breakthrough single “Messy” led her to win the Rising Star award. Young expressed her deep appreciation for the honor, reflecting on her journey from writing songs in her bedroom at age ten to receiving accolades on a major platform.

“I’ve never particularly believed that everything starts from a great song,” Charli XCX elaborated, insisting that identity and perspective are vital in captivating audiences beyond technical skills. This resonates with comments made by other artists throughout the evening, including Robbie Williams, who accepted the Icon Award, and Orla Gartland, who won Best Song Musically and Lyrically for her introspective ballad “Mine.”

Overall, the event celebrated the rich tapestry of music, showcasing both established legends and emerging talents, emphasizing creativity, collaboration, and the evolving landscape of the music industry. This atmosphere of camaraderie and inspiration serves as a hopeful reminder of the potential for future greatness in music.
