Minister Charan Jeath Singh has been entrusted with a significant responsibility as he takes on the role of overseeing Public Enterprises, following a clear directive from the Prime Minister. His mandate is to revitalize government-owned companies, transforming them into profitable and sustainable entities.
During his inaugural official engagement, Minister Singh emphasized his commitment to this task, stating, “I am here, appointed by the Prime Minister, to turn around government-owned enterprises into profitable organisations.” His portfolio also includes Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Culture, Heritage and Arts, alongside Public Enterprises.
In a meeting with Acting Permanent Secretary Laisa Bolalevu and the Ministry’s senior management team, Minister Singh received an in-depth briefing on the operations, strategic goals, and current performance of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) that the ministry oversees.
Highlighting past governmental support for these enterprises, he noted that it is now time to implement stricter financial discipline and focus on delivering results. “The Government has been supporting these companies for many years, and my role is to ensure they become financially sustainable while delivering tangible benefits to communities and businesses across Fiji,” he remarked.
Singh underscored that enhancing the performance of SOEs would yield broader benefits for the nation, including economic growth, job creation, and improved service delivery. The Minister’s proactive approach aims to not only enhance the viability of these enterprises but also contribute positively to the overall economy of Fiji, signaling a future where government-owned companies can thrive independently and serve the public effectively.
