The 2025 Westcosie Sports and Fun Day commenced with a strong commitment to inclusion and equality, highlighted by a motivational speech from the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Sashi Kiran, at Penang Sangam Primary School in Rakiraki. Over 600 students and officials with disabilities from seven districts participated in this significant event themed “Champions of Determination.”

Minister Kiran praised the dedication of organizers and communities in advocating for the rights and capabilities of children with special needs. She emphasized that each participant embodies the spirit of strength, perseverance, and courage. “You are all true champions not just for participating today, but for inspiring us daily,” she remarked.

The Minister recognized the contributions of WESTCOSIE and Ra School for Special Education for their relentless efforts in fostering inclusion and visibility of children with disabilities. She articulated that inclusion is not merely an act of charity, but a fundamental human right. “Today’s event is a beautiful reminder of how far we have come,” she stated, reinforcing the urgency of eliminating structural and attitudinal barriers in society.

In a heartfelt tribute, she thanked parents, caregivers, and educators for their unwavering support, labeling them as “unsung heroes” whose love and dedication are vital to the wellbeing of children with disabilities. The Minister encouraged the young athletes to embrace the joy of the event and support one another, highlighting their roles as “true Champions of Determination.”

The festivities included a variety of inclusive and adaptive sports activities promoting joy, unity, and equal opportunities for all. This event highlights the increasing recognition of the importance of inclusive sports initiatives, similar to past events like the Central Eastern Council of Special and Inclusive Educators Games, which emphasized expanding opportunities for children with disabilities to showcase their abilities and foster social interactions.

With a focus on creating a supportive environment for all, the event stands as a hopeful symbol of a more inclusive and understanding society. As communities continue to rally behind such initiatives, there is a promising outlook for disabled individuals in Fiji, fostering not just participation in sports but a broader acceptance and recognition of their contributions in various spheres of life.
