Day one of the Central Eastern Council of Special & Inclusive Education (CECOSIE) Games kicked off at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva yesterday, welcoming more than 750 students with special needs. This vibrant two-day event, which concludes today, features participation from ten schools, including two inclusive institutions—Arya Samaj Primary School and Ratu Latianara Primary School.
CECOSIE president Deepak Sanjay Singh noted that this event marks the second iteration since its revival last year, after it was previously put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The games include a variety of individual and team sports, providing an opportunity for these students to showcase their talents.
The tournament enjoys significant support from various organizations, including the Education Ministry. Local businesses such as Extra Supermarket and McDonald’s are also stepping in to sponsor different days of the competition, highlighting community involvement in fostering inclusivity. Singh pointed out that yesterday’s activities were sponsored by Extra Supermarket, with today’s events backed by McDonald’s.
The focus on inclusivity in sports continues to resonate, backed by similar successful initiatives in the region aimed at expanding opportunities for children with disabilities. Events like the CECOSIE Games not only cultivate athletic talent but also promote social skills and community awareness, reinforcing the belief that all children deserve a platform to thrive.
This ongoing commitment to inclusive sports in Fiji signals a hopeful and promising future for students, encouraging them to embrace competitiveness, camaraderie, and joy in participation. As the event continues, it embodies the spirit of unity, acceptance, and recognition of the unique abilities of all participants.
