Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that a ceasefire with Russia in the ongoing war, which has persisted for over three years, is conceivable at any moment. During a joint press conference in Prague with Czech President Petr Pavel, Zelenskiy emphasized the necessity for allies to increase pressure on Moscow to implement this measure. He argued that without such pressure, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin may not take meaningful steps toward concluding the conflict.

Zelenskiy remarked, “We believe that without increased pressure, Russia will not take real practical steps to end the war,” pointing out that it has been over 50 days since Russia ignored an American proposal for a complete ceasefire. He asserted that a ceasefire could begin immediately and should last for at least 30 days to afford diplomacy a genuine opportunity.

The Czech government has been an unwavering supporter of Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in 2022, initiating a plan to provide Ukraine with substantial military aid, including a target of 1.8 million shells by 2025.

In light of recent developments, including reports of North Korean troops engaged alongside Russian forces, it appears that Zelenskiy’s calls for increased international support are more pressing than ever. With about 10,000 North Korean soldiers reportedly fighting in the conflict, this escalation could complicate diplomatic efforts and intensify military dynamics.

Despite the challenging situation, Zelenskiy’s push for an immediate ceasefire represents a glimmer of hope amid ongoing hostilities. There is a significant opportunity for global cohesion and support to foster a peaceful resolution, enabling Ukraine to strengthen its position while reinforcing its sovereignty. As the international community rallies behind Ukraine, there remains optimism that collective actions can lead to a stabilization of the region and ultimately peace.
