The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways has initiated an important campaign focused on eradicating Brucellosis and Tuberculosis among cattle, known as the Brucellosis and Tuberculosis Eradication Campaign (BTEC). This initiative is designed to safeguard the health of livestock and ensure public health safety, as both diseases pose significant risks.
The ministry has deployed a dedicated team of four officers from the Animal Health and Production Division to conduct crucial testing on farms in the Navosa region and the highlands of Nadi. These assessments are integral in determining the health status of cattle against Brucellosis and Tuberculosis.
Agriculture Minister Vatimi Rayalu emphasized the government’s commitment to sustainable livestock farming and protecting the agricultural sector from the repercussions of these diseases. He noted that test results will provide essential information for farm management, enabling better health monitoring of cattle and enhancing food safety. Additionally, the BTEC initiative aims to educate farmers on best animal husbandry practices to help prevent further spread of infections.
The testing will continue across various farms in Fiji, and farmers interested in participating are encouraged to reach out to their local agriculture stations for guidance and support.
This proactive approach reflects a broader commitment to improving livestock health, which is vital for the agricultural industry’s vitality and the overall food security of the region. By prioritizing education and providing necessary resources, the campaign holds promise for a healthier future in agriculture.
In summary, the BTEC initiative not only strives to eliminate serious cattle diseases but also fosters a culture of informed farming practices that will benefit both farmers and consumers.
