Caroline Pickering is set to take on her role as the director of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) starting January 1. Her appointment follows a recommendation made by the National Anti-Money Laundering Council.

Currently serving as the manager of policy and compliance at Fiji FIU, Pickering will succeed Razim Buksh, who retired in 2023. Governor Arif Ali has expressed confidence in Pickering’s capabilities, stating that she is the ideal candidate to steer the FIU through its next phase of growth.

With over 25 years of experience, Pickering brings a wealth of knowledge and strategic leadership skills that are crucial in navigating Fiji’s evolving digital financial landscape. She has been with the FIU since 2006 and has played a key role in establishing the regulatory and supervisory framework to combat money laundering and financial crime in Fiji.

This leadership change comes at a pivotal time as the FIU confronts challenges and opportunities within the digital finance sector. Ms. Pickering’s extensive background indicates a promising future for the FIU, as her experience will likely enhance its effectiveness in ensuring financial integrity and compliance in the nation.

Overall, this appointment marks a positive step forward for Fiji’s efforts against financial crime and strengthens the governance of the financial sector during a time of significant transformation.
