A Canadian security firm founded by a former Fijian national has opened an outlet in Suva and says it will create up to 100 jobs while bringing international training and operational standards to Fiji’s private security sector. Metropolitan Security Canada launched Metropolitan Security Fiji last weekend, with founder Abhinash Prasad describing the move as both a strategic business expansion and a personal return to contribute to Fiji’s growing business, tourism and events industries.
Prasad, who said he has more than 26 years’ experience in the Canadian security industry, told reporters the new operation will recruit between 50 and 100 staff in its initial phase. Roles will include site security officers and administrative positions, with the company signalling further hiring as it wins additional contracts outside the capital. “As operations expand and more contracts are secured across the country, we anticipate creating more employment opportunities for local workers,” he said.
A central plank of Metropolitan Security Fiji’s pitch is raising professional standards through structured training and international best practice. Prasad said the company reviewed the local security landscape and identified opportunities to strengthen professional training, operational procedures and career development pathways for security personnel. “Our aim is to help elevate industry standards through structured training and international best practices,” he said.
The company also committed to offering employment conditions it says will improve job stability for officers. Prasad said workers would be paid above the national minimum wage and receive medical cover, as well as support for further education. “Investing in our people leads to better service and professionalism,” he said, adding that those measures help officers “build stable careers while maintaining high standards of security services.”
Metropolitan Security Fiji will provide a range of services to clients in Suva and, it hopes, beyond. The business listed site security officers, special event officers, a close protection division, concierge security services and a mobile security division among its offerings. Prasad framed the service mix as tailored to the needs of Fiji’s events and hospitality sectors as well as commercial and residential customers.
Prasad emphasised the company’s commitment to working with local professionals and communities rather than displacing existing providers. He said bringing Canadian operational experience back to Fiji was a long-held vision for a business founded by a Fijian abroad, and that partnerships with local stakeholders would be central to the firm’s approach.
The launch marks Metropolitan Security Canada’s first direct presence in the South Pacific and signals renewed interest by overseas firms in Fiji’s private security market. By pledging higher wages, training and employee benefits, the company is positioning itself to attract recruits and clients looking for internationally benchmarked services. Prasad said the initial hires and rollout of training programmes would be the immediate priorities as Metropolitan Security Fiji establishes its footprint in Suva.
