The Pacific Warriors Canada are buzzing with pride and excitement as they embark on their journey to Fiji for the McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s, which kicks off today. For Iokimi Vunituraga, co-founder and prop of the team, this tournament signifies much more than just competition; it represents the realization of a dream for many of their young players.

“It’s a dream come true for a couple of the boys in Canada. Coming here and experiencing rugby sevens in Fiji, one of the biggest tournaments in the world, is an incredible opportunity for our players,” Vunituraga expressed.

Founded in 2019 by Selo Vunituraga, the Pacific Warriors aim to promote rugby sevens across Canada and provide valuable development opportunities for young Fijian players residing in British Columbia and beyond. Over the years, the team has been enhanced by the involvement of experienced Fijian stars, including Olympic gold medalist Napolioni Bolaca and Tevita Daugunu, who have brought excitement and elevated standards to sevens rugby in Canada.

“Playing with the Fijian boys in Canada was something else. You know how Fijians play. They like to throw the ball around. It’s exciting, fast, and different from the usual style we see in Canada. That flair has been a big boost for our younger players,” Vunituraga added.

The Warriors’ journey in Canada has been impressive, as they have remained undefeated in British Columbia tournaments over the past two years. They are now eager to translate that success into their performance at the Coral Coast 7s, seeking international experience to further enhance their squad.

“Our goal here at the Coral Coast is the same as in Canada. We want to play our game, learn, and give our younger players experience at a high level,” Vunituraga stated, also taking the opportunity to express gratitude to supporters, sponsors, and families for their backing.

“This is a dream come true for all of us,” he noted, highlighting the significance of this milestone not only as a competitive outing but as a testament to the unity and talent within the Canadian-Fijian community.

The Pacific Warriors’ debut at the Coral Coast 7s marks not just a journey, but a bold assertion of their commitment to the sport. They will face the Sydney Fijians in their first match at 12:18 PM, and fans can catch all the action live on FBC Sports, with overseas viewers able to tune in via Viti+ for $99 FJD. This event not only showcases extraordinary talent but also celebrates the power of rugby to unify communities across the globe.
