The Ministry of Agriculture is taking a proactive approach to combat rising drug use among young individuals by promoting agriculture as a key solution. This initiative aims to tackle the root causes of substance abuse, such as unemployment and a lack of direction in life. Minister for Agriculture, Tomasi Tunabuna, has announced that the Ministry is crafting targeted strategies to engage youth in farming, paving the way for sustainable livelihoods.
During a recent Cabinet meeting, Tunabuna emphasized the importance of integrating youth into the agricultural sector more intentionally. He pointed out that agriculture extends beyond mere food production; it serves as a source of income, facilitates skills development, and offers long-term opportunities for young people who might resort to unsafe alternatives.
“This is a war against drugs, and everyone must be involved,” Tunabuna remarked, expressing his confidence that those within the agriculture sector will play a vital role in addressing this pressing issue. He also acknowledged the ongoing challenges, particularly the availability and security of land, which have historically hindered agricultural development across Fiji.
Supporting this initiative, Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa urged the community to refrain from illicit drug use, highlighting the serious mental health issues that can arise from substance abuse. Tunabuna’s strategic shift illustrates a significant policy evolution by using agriculture not only as an economic engine but also as a means to empower youth, fortify communities, and enhance national resilience.
