Opposition MP Ketan Lal has called for urgent action against the rising tide of bigotry on social media platforms, particularly those affiliated with government officials. Speaking during a parliamentary session, Lal emphasized that social media should not serve as a breeding ground for racism and other forms of discrimination.

He pointed out that, similar to how a person shouting racial slurs in a public market would be held accountable, those spreading hate online should face similar repercussions. Lal’s remarks come in the wake of alarming trends on official government social media pages, especially those of Prime Minister and Fisheries Minister, where he observed a plethora of racist comments directed towards him. He expressed concern that, despite the protections offered under the 2013 Constitution, the prevalence of such harmful discourse undermines the spirit of those safeguards.

Lal urged that the Online Safety Commission be adequately resourced and empowered to act swiftly against offenders, advocating for a more proactive approach to combat hate speech online. His statements reflect broader concerns regarding free expression and the need for accountability, echoing similar critiques he has made in the past about the government’s tendency to block dissenting opinions on its platforms.

This situation resonates with ongoing discussions around fostering a more respectful online culture in Fiji, underscoring the importance of open dialogue in a democratic society. The growing acknowledgment among lawmakers that constructive discourse is essential offers a hopeful perspective for the country.

As Fiji navigates the complexities of digital communication and governance, there is potential for positive change, providing opportunities to enhance public trust and promote an inclusive environment where all voices are heard.
