The full report of the Commission of Inquiry (COI) regarding the controversial appointment of Barbara Malimali as Fiji’s Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) is facing demands for immediate release. Opposition Member of Parliament Jone Usamate has condemned the government’s approach to the COI findings, accusing it of “selective justice and political maneuvering.”

Usamate argues that transparency is vital for the public’s understanding of the recent cabinet developments and the suspension of FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali. He stated that citizens deserve to see the unfiltered truth and criticized the government for what he perceives as cherry-picking the implementation of the COI recommendations. “If the COI report clearly states that Barbara Malimali’s appointment was illegal, then why was she merely suspended?” Usamate questioned, calling for accountability over the alleged irregularities.

Additionally, Usamate has expressed concern over the appointment of Lavinia Rokoika as acting FICAC Commissioner, highlighting her connections to notable political figures that could compromise her impartiality. He emphasized the need for an independent leader to restore trust in FICAC, a commission already viewed as lacking credibility due to ongoing controversies.

The mounting pressure for transparency has been echoed by various political leaders. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s recent statements suggest a cautious approach toward the report’s release, citing potential ongoing investigations that could be hindered by premature disclosure. However, opponents argue that withholding the findings only erodes public trust.

This inquiry aims not only to address Malimali’s appointment but also to investigate broader governance issues within FICAC. Public anticipation remains high that the findings will lead to substantive reforms and aims to foster a culture of accountability in Fiji’s governance.

As stakeholders await the report’s release, there is hope that it will ignite meaningful changes and restore confidence in public institutions, ultimately enhancing ethical standards in Fiji’s political landscape.
