Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Planning, Aporosa Lutunauga, expressed optimism about the government’s potential approval for an increase in police personnel during a strategic planning workshop held in Labasa. He emphasized the necessity for more officers on the ground to better serve the community, citing the current police to population ratio of 1:1800, which he deems insufficient given the population of nearly 900,000.

Lutunauga highlighted the department’s commitment to fostering an ethically-driven, community-focused police force, indicating that officers lacking ethical standards should not remain within the ranks. The ACP also acknowledged challenges regarding the confidentiality of individuals filing complaints and affirmed that the police are working to protect the anonymity of informants to ensure a safer reporting environment.

Furthermore, Lutunauga indicated that effective human resource management and improved working conditions for police officers are vital steps towards enhancing service delivery. His remarks resonate with recent discussions led by Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, about increasing police accountability and professionalism within the force through ongoing reform efforts such as the Police Reset Strategy. These initiatives aim to build public trust and address issues of community safety.

The drive for more officers comes in response to rising crime rates and public calls for better policing services. Despite current challenges, the leadership within the Fiji Police Force is working toward improving the situation, showcasing a promising outlook for a more robust police force that can more effectively engage with and protect the community.

The continued focus on community engagement and ethical practices signifies a positive direction for law enforcement in Fiji, fostering hope for a safer future.
