Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has emphasized the necessity for public consultations to be genuine and inclusive, ensuring fair representation for all communities in the decision-making process. He called for these consultations to be free from political manipulation and to genuinely serve the interests of citizens.

Seruiratu expressed concern that recent public consultations had failed to attract adequate participation, especially from residents in rural and remote areas who may find it challenging to attend formal venues. He stressed that as a representative of the people, he is committed to voicing their concerns and ensuring that their perspectives are brought to the forefront.

Highlighting the importance of sincerity in governmental dialogue, Seruiratu urged the government to listen attentively and consider feedback from all sectors of society, refraining from dismissing opinions along political divides. “People deserve to be heard, especially regarding issues that affect their livelihoods,” he stated. He reaffirmed the opposition’s responsibility to relay constituents’ concerns to Parliament and relevant ministries, advocating for transparent engagement that fosters trust and ensures that development truly centers around the people’s needs.

This emphasis on constructive dialogue reflects previous sentiments Seruiratu has shared regarding the government’s transparency, particularly in the context of proposed amendments to the 2013 Constitution. His previous criticisms focused on the necessity for clarity and open discussions that include diverse voices, underscoring the positive potential for bipartisan cooperation, which can lead to meaningful reform.

While political tensions persist, Seruiratu’s ongoing advocacy for genuine engagement showcases a hopeful pathway towards building consensus and improving governance, ultimately benefiting the Fijian populace. Engaging with all community members may, in turn, cultivate trust in the political system and promote a more inclusive democratic process in Fiji.
