The districts of Wailevu and Savusavu in Cakaudrove have made strides in developing tourism by launching their first-ever community-based tourism packages. This initiative aims to highlight the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of the Cakaudrove Province, encouraging local engagement and sustainable practices within tourism.
The recent collaboration involved signing an agreement between Rosie Holidays Vualiku, Muanivatu Trails, and seven communities from these districts. Managing Director Epeli Asaro expressed pride in this initiative, stating that Muanivatu Trails has been committed to fostering a community-driven tourism model focused on respect, authenticity, and sustainability for nearly a year. The collaboration has led to the introduction of seven guided day tours in villages such as Vuadomo, Nadamole, Vunivesi, Nukubalavu, and Nukuramase.
Rosie Holidays General Manager Eroni Pumaau affirmed that this partnership is a significant first for community-based tourism in Vanua Levu and expressed excitement about marketing the Northern Division as a key tourist spot. The commitment outlined in the agreement includes provisions for training offered through Rosie Academy, which will provide the youth of the two districts with valuable skills aimed at bolstering their role within the tourism sector.
This new initiative supports a broader strategy reflected in the ongoing Na Vualiku Project, which seeks to transform Vanua Levu into a thriving tourism hub by improving infrastructure and creating opportunities for local communities. This project has garnered support from the World Bank, which has pledged significant funding to ensure sustainable growth in tourism, providing a hopeful outlook on economic development in the Northern Division.
There is considerable optimism surrounding these efforts, as they not only aim to uplift local economies but also empower communities directly, ensuring that the benefits of tourism are shared broadly. Such initiatives are integral in promoting both cultural preservation and environmental sustainability, ultimately contributing to a brighter future for the regions involved.
