Cakau Pearls surge in second half to edge Suva Velvet in Tier Two U-9 netball quarter-final as Nadi Jet beat Ba 4-1

Cakau Pearls staged a stirring second-half comeback to topple Suva Velvet in their Tier Two under-9 quarter-final at the Crest Fiji Primary Schools Netball Tournament, overturning a one-point halftime deficit with a four-goal burst after the break. The victory gives the Pearls momentum as the tournament moves into its knockout phase, while Nadi Jet also advanced with a polished 4-1 win over Ba in another quarter-final tie.

The opening half between Cakau Pearls and Suva Velvet was a tight, low-scoring contest defined by intense defensive pressure and crisp, quick passing through the midcourt. Suva Velvet eked out a slim one-point lead by halftime after several possessions ended in contested turnovers and earning opportunities each way. Both sides showed disciplined marking and composure under the early spotlight of the primary schools competition.

Momentum shifted decisively after the interval when Cakau Pearls returned with renewed energy. The Pearls increased their tempo, tightened their defensive rotations and forced a string of Suva Velvet errors. Capitalising on those turnovers, Cakau converted the chances presented to them and produced a run of four goals in the second half that proved decisive. Suva Velvet continued to fight, but were unable to stem the attacking surge that turned the contest in Cakau’s favour during the closing stages.

Coaches and parents watching the under-9 encounter praised the youngsters for their resilience and competitive spirit. The match highlighted the emphasis on fundamental skills at this level — intercepts, accurate feeding into the circle and composed finishing — with the Pearls’ second-half intensity underlining the gap that can emerge when momentum swings in youth fixtures.

Elsewhere in the Tier Two quarter-finals, Nadi Jet put in a composed performance to defeat Ba 4-1. Nadi Jet’s defence remained compact throughout, shutting down Ba’s attempts to build attacking rhythm, while the Jets were efficient in converting the opportunities they created on the other end. That result keeps Nadi Jet’s defensive record intact and sees them join the other quarter-final winners in the next round.

The Crest Fiji Primary Schools Netball Tournament continues to serve as an important development platform for Fiji’s youngest netballers, giving primary school teams from across the country exposure to competitive, organised knock-out basketball-style netball play. With these quarter-final outcomes now in, attention turns to the semi-finals as teams prepare to regroup and chase a spot in the final.
