The Cabinet has approved a review of the Mahogany Industry Development Act 2010 (MIDA 2010) and the Mahogany Industry (Licensing and Branding) Act 2011 (MILBA 2011). MIDA 2010 established the Mahogany Industry Council, while MILBA 2011 outlines the licensing and branding processes for locally sourced mahogany.
The Mahogany Industry Taskforce Review Committee, formed in March 2024, suggested this legislative review to tackle challenges encountered by stakeholders in the mahogany sector. The Cabinet indicated that the review aims to evaluate the Mahogany Industry Council’s role and facilitate further growth of the mahogany industry, enhancing the recognition of Fiji’s hardwood products at both local and international levels.
