Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has dismissed concerns regarding the $2 million expenditure associated with the recent expansion of the Cabinet, which includes three additional ministers and four assistant ministers. Minister for Finance Biman Prasad clarified that the cost of the Cabinet shake-up will indeed amount to $2 million, contrasting with Mr. Rabuka’s earlier assertion that it would only be $1 million.
Despite facing significant criticism from both political adversaries and the general public, Mr. Rabuka defended the move as a priority in the government’s agenda. He stated, “It is part of our journey; we will have to find the money for it,” and emphasized that this expenditure is necessary for the functioning of government.
Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry criticized the decision as irresponsible, pointing out that it is unjustifiable given the current economic challenges the country faces. He expressed skepticism that such changes would alleviate pressing issues like the high cost of living or rising unemployment.
Unity Fiji Leader Savenaca Narube echoed these sentiments, asserting that the government’s credibility is diminished by its decision to increase expenditure while claiming difficulty in managing national debt. He noted inconsistencies in government financial management, highlighting the contrast between spending on ministers and the clear struggles of the populace.
Opposition MP Jone Usamate characterized the Cabinet expansion as “absolute hogwash,” suggesting that it reveals a government with too many underperforming ministers and a Prime Minister lacking the resolve to make necessary changes. He also criticized the perceived favoritism in civil service appointments, arguing that the selection of non-professionals over experienced civil servants has led to inefficiencies.
The situation presents a complex landscape where the government’s priorities are being called into question by various stakeholders. As the global economic climate remains challenging, it may be essential for leaders to focus on transparent governance and restoring public trust. This Cabinet expansion, while intended as a strategic move, underscores the need for a more grounded approach to budgeting and resource allocation for the benefit of all citizens.
