Eight bus operators have been fined due to oil leakages at the Lautoka bus stand, a situation exacerbated by ongoing pavement upgrade works in the area. The fines were imposed following spot-checks by the Lautoka City Council (LCC), which stressed the urgent need for bus companies to repair faulty vehicles to prevent further issues.

LCC highlighted the dual concerns posed by oil spills: they not only create an unsightly mess but also pose safety hazards, risking slips and contributing to environmental pollution. The local council noted that the existing $40 fine under the Litter Act 2008 does not serve as a strong deterrent for such violations, calling for more robust penalties.

This situation aligns with broader concerns regarding public transport safety and environmental responsibility, similar to discussions around littering during events, as highlighted by recent initiatives from the Minister for Environment and Climate Change. As citizens engage with local authorities about the importance of maintaining clean, safe public spaces, there is hope that these conversations will lead to more effective enforcement of environmental regulations and improved infrastructure efforts. By encouraging bus operators to operate responsibly, the LCC’s actions aim to create a safer and cleaner transportation environment for all.
