The Sugar Cane Growers Council (SCGC) has raised significant concerns regarding the intentional burning of sugarcane prior to the 2025 crushing season, which is not only detrimental to individual growers but also impacts the overall industry. Reports of off-season cane fires have indicated a total loss for affected farmers, creating a severe setback just weeks before the harvest is set to begin.

In an official statement, the SCGC noted, “Growers have put in great efforts to maintain productivity on their farms, although some areas still require improvement.” The council expressed profound disappointment over these acts and called for unity and respect among the farming community, emphasizing the importance of valuing each other’s hard work to prevent actions that could undermine collective efforts.

In a more positive development, the SCGC has announced a timely special payment of $5 per tonne of sugarcane, which is expected to provide much-needed financial relief to farmers as preparations for the upcoming harvest ramp up. This will be in addition to the fourth cane payment of $17.03, leading to total earnings of $91.66 per tonne, exceeding the government’s guaranteed price.

The upcoming 2025 crushing season is anticipated to commence with the Lautoka Mill starting on June 11, followed by Labasa Mill on June 17 and Rarawai Mill on June 24. This year, increased productivity is expected, supported by favorable weather, government assistance, and strong engagement from stakeholders.

Despite the challenges posed by the recent cane fires, the optimism within the agricultural sector remains. Stakeholders are hopeful that, combined with financial support and improved growing conditions, farmers will navigate the economic challenges effectively, enhancing the sustainability of Fiji’s vital sugar industry.

This situation reflects both concern for individual farmer losses due to destructive practices and a collective commitment to building resilience in the sugarcane community, fostering hope and preparation for a fruitful season ahead.
